Vegan Shoe of the Day: Massive Faux Leather Fall Boot Guide (50+!)

Clearly, I’m obsessed with shoes. Especially boots.  I LOVE boots. And one of the best parts of summer, in my opinion, is that Fall boots start making an appearance.  I wear boots all year (as it’s gotten harder and harder for me to wear heels recently, and I prefer boots over flats), with jeans or dresses or a combination of both.  Cool non-leather boots are not too hard to find, but in Summer a ton of them start popping up in preparation for next season and it’s a perfect time to snag a variety for later in the year.

I’ve been noting my favs for a few weeks now, and here they are!  And yes, I would buy all of these…all 50 plus!  And some of them I already have, lol.  There are definitely a mix of styles here, I couldn’t make up my mind to include just flat boots or booties or knee highs, so there’s a little bit of everything.  Much like my closet.

Above are my favorite boots/booties currently and from over the years.  I’ve got a few more pairs, but these each have a special place in my heart.

Left to right:  Rainboots purchased in 2008 for a trip to England (in the winter).  Wore them every day I was there. Franco Sarto tall black boot purchased in 2006 from Zappos.  I should have been saving all my money for grad school expenses but….yeah.  Charlotte Russe tall brown boots purchased last year, I wear these constantly and get complements every time.  Short cowboy boots, I think from Delias.  They go with EVERYTHING.  Short brown buckle boot, can’t remember where I got these, but sooo comfortable.  Black buckle bootie, I think from Bakers. Most people think it’s bebe.  The last two I don’t really wear any more, but I can’t bear to part with them.  The one on the far right is from a pair of black, platform boots I bought in the Camden market when I lived in London circa 2000.  They were major clubbing boots, I used to dance for hours in these.  They have been re-soled and nailed back together half a dozen times.  Next to these,  is a minor miracle – a black, platform boot that I bought around the time I stopped wearing leather.  Sixteen years ago. Even though they are scuffed up, I could still wear these today if I wanted to, as they have yet to fall apart.  And incredibly – these boots are from Payless.  Yes, Payless, makers of the cheapest shoes on the planet.  Just goes to show, you never know where you are going to find an amazing (and long lasting!) pair of boots.

Happy shopping!

Hot Weather Tips for Your Pet from AdoptaPet.com

This is my cat James.  He hates Summer.

If your pets are as miserable as mine during the So Cal heat, check out these tips from the AdoptAPet.com blog to keep them from getting as pissed off as James.

Keep Your Pet Safe this Summer

I’ll never forget the first time I had to take care of a dog for an extended period of time. My younger brother suffered from bad allergies, so we never had one growing up, and thus I never had the chance to learn about proper pet care. Sure I’d read a few Web sites and had received some tips from friends, but there’s no substitute for real experience. I’ve never been more nervous than I was on that first walk, especially after realizing that my new buddy Porter liked to growl and bark at every other dog he saw on the street. Apparently he liked to assert his dominance.

It was a long month, but by the end of it I was sad to give Porter back to his owners. After taking the time to read up on proper pet care and soliciting even more advice and tips from my dog-loving friends, I was finally starting to feel comfortable and truly enjoy spending time with the big guy. Since then I’ve pet-sat many times for a variety of different dogs, cats, fish and what have you. But I’ve never forgotten some of the important tips I learned that first month – especially in regards to keeping your pet safe from the hot summer sun.

Below are some of the most important tips I learned about proper summer pet care, all of which I still follow today.

  • Keep them hydrated. Just as water is important for you and me in the hot summer sun, it’s also vital for your pets. Make sure they have access to fresh water – both inside and out. Keeping them hydrated will not only help to cool them down, it can also help to prevent heat-related problems, including heat exhaustion and even the more serious heat stroke.
  • Take frequent, shorter walks. Rather than one long walk every day, take your pet on several shorter walks on hot days. This allows them to still get the proper exercise they need while also making sure they don’t overheat in the sun. Overexertion is one of the biggest causes f heat-related illnesses in pets. Shorter, more frequent walks will help prevent this, and can also help to keep you fresh as well. If possible, try to time your walks for early morning or evening hours when the sun is less intense.
  • Don’t leave your pet in the car. We’ve all been tempted to take our dogs along with us on an errand or two, but you should never leave your pet alone in the car on a hot summer day. Even with the windows down, the inside of your car can reach a scorching 120 degrees. You wouldn’t leave your pet in the oven – at least not while it’s on – so don’t leave them in your car.
  • Watch for heat-related issues. Just like you, your pet can suffer from both heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Keep an eye out for the different symptoms of exhaustion and heat stroke so you can be ready in case of an emergency. The most common signs include panting, staring, anxiety, rapid pulse, vomiting and collapsing. If you think your pet might be suffering from a serious heat-related illness, contact a veterinarian immediately. You should also attempt to lower your pet’s body temperature by applying cool – but not cold – towels to the chest and neck area.
  • Be aware in crowded areas. While it might seem fun and harmless at first, it is usually not a good idea to take your pet with you to a crowded summer party or event. This can include concerts, Fourth of July parties and fireworks shows. Loud noises and stress associated with the large crowds can be dangerous for your pets when combined with the summer heat. If you do take your pets with you, keep an eye on them and make sure they are tagged and leashed at all times.

REPOST: Sneak Peek at NEW Toms Vegan Styles for Fall

TOMS was cool enough to send me a sneak peek of their new Summer ’10 line! Inspired by the Spice Route, the new collection captivates the well-worn footsteps of the historic journey that joined East and West, and will be available starting Monday, July 19th!

I’m a big fan of TOMS and I know I’ve featured them on Vegan Shoe of the Day before, for both their men’s and women’s styles, so I’m excited to debut a few of the new vegan styles here!  What do you think of the new line?  I’m a little disappointed it doesn’t include any of their summer wedges (Suede insert? Weak.) but impressed on how they always wind up using really cool fabrics and designs.  Wish the vegan line was a little more extensive, however hoping some of these come in additional colors as well.

Women’s Snow Leopard Classics (I think this is my fav, wonder if it comes in black…)

Women’s Morocco Classics

Women’s Love is the New Black Canvas Classics (Okay, just kidding, I think this is my fav too)

Men’s Love is the New Black Canvas Classics

Men’s Indigo Gingham Check Classics (these are sweet)

Men’s Grey Gingham Check Classics
